"All fossil fuels, with the possible exception of natural gas, contain constituents that will promote corrosion on the fire side of boiler components.  The 'bad actors' are compounds of sulfur, vanadium, and sodium; but in the case of municipal-refuse boilers, chlorine in an increasing concern.  There are three temperature regimes where fire-side corrosion occurs:

1.  Less than 300 °F.   Dew-point corrosion occurs when sulfuric acid condenses.

2.  ..... Read more of this National Board Classic Article

cheplusintro4.gif (5700 bytes)Take advantage of the Tank Volume Calculator from Lightnin Mixer.  Use this handy online tool to calculate dimenions for standard tanks.  Cylindrical, Rectangular, and Horizontal tanks included with several top and bottom styles to choose from.  A great resources! cheplusintro6.gif (4459 bytes)Replace a Float Valve with an Automated Valve Cheaply, Reliably

Float valves can fail for numerous reasons. The float corrodes and sinks, the float arm bends up or sideways, the float comes off the float arm, the float arm hinge wears through, the arm is jammed in place by foreign matter, there are still other failure modes too. Suddenly the simple, trusty, ‘been around for years’ mechanical float valve turns out to be not really that reliable. Here’s a better alternative, and it also comes with auto control.

Replace the float valve with an actuated valve that is controlled by a high-level float switch. But to build in reliability (and this is the important part) install a second float switch in parallel which also operates the valve. So if one float fails the other continues to work. One other requirement is to insure the floats are made of materials chemically compatible with the process liquid and conditions.

It’s a very cheap solution that removes numerous failure modes and provides high reliability.
