I am establishing the manometric seal at the top of the N2 blanketed tank.
How to calculate the level of the glycerine needed in order to get 255mm WC maximum pressure setting? I means if the tank pressure up to 255mm WC, this seal will blow off to protect the tank overpressure in case the breather valve failure.
Please help. Thanks!

Unless I am missing something here, the level of glycerin to be equivalent pressure in mm wc would be:

X = (sg water / sg fluid ) x Y

where

X = height of fluid column
Y= height of water column
(X and Y must be in the same linear units)

sg fluid= sg of new fluid which for glycerin I believe is 1.26 but you should confirm this value.
sg water = 1.0[/indent]

Therefore X = (1.0 / 1.26) x 255 = 202.4 mm

This is a "one time" device. What do you do after it blows off and how do you know it did? After blowing off, the tank is open and also the size of the manometer piping must be adequate to vent the tank.

It would be nice if you would provide a sketch so that we were sure that this correctly answered your question.

Yes, i think you are absolutely right. The gylcerin height 202.4mm is equivalent to the tank is full with N2 pressure 255mmWC (maximum holding pressure).

FYI. My nitrogen valve pressure cut off setting is 125mm WC and breather valve 200 WC will lift up to release pressure.

Basic step to prepare Manometric Seal,

1. Empty tank with no N2 pressure after closing manhole.
2. Pour the glycerin and start to introduce the N2 pressure till 125mm WC the valve will cut off.
3. Pour extra glycerin till the level that can hold 255mm WC pressure.

My question are
How to establish the initial level height?
What is the final height I should getting? I means when N2 gas going in, the liquid will start moving in the manometic.

You are right, it is only "one time", we have frequent check on the level in 4hourly daily to top up glycerin. If blown off, the outside air will ingress to the tank & just re-establish the seal again. Thanks!

In answer to your question, "How to establish the initial level height?
What is the final height I should getting? I means when N2 gas going in, the liquid will start moving in the manometic."

The initial position of the liquid in the u-tube will be level. Or both legs will be at the zero reading. When the tank pressure reaches 200 mm then one leg will be at -100 and the other at +100 mm.

The amount of liguid to satisfy this will have to be the quantity to fill the tube to 200mm length plus the volume in the u bend.

Remember you are venting this tank so the tube must be of sufficient diameter to be able to vent the tank gas without causing an undue additional build-up in pressure. This is important.

Dear Proinwv,

Appreciate your advice and guidance very much,
here i attached the sketch of u-tube seal.

If I interprete correctly from your mail,

Graphic A:
To fill in glycerin to a certain level (any level will do) and set it as ZERO point for reference.

Graphic B:
When I establish the pressure in the tank (say 255mm WC), the level at one hand should drop -100mm and another hand should increase 100mm.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks!

My apologies for the late reply. For some reason I did not get a notification of the posting...or I missed it.

Your sketch is correct, except I believe you should have used +/- 127.5 mm for each leg.
