i am also interested in this topic. i work for a very small company that sells some pressure relief valves. is there some logical/mathematical way of calculating the psi needed to open the valve depending which type of spring is installed? i've attached a rough sketch of our relief valve. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, any spring should come with a spring rate, which is the force change per unit change in length of the spring. Typically, you would see this stated in pounds force per inch of compression.
I am surprised though, if your company sells springloaded valves, that there would be no knowledge available to deal with your question. I am sure a quick google session will turn up a plethora of information.
