Dear all,

how to I get the "sun area" for calculating H in the equation

GPM = BxH/(500xGxC)?

I have a vessel of known diameter and length.

Thanks in advance for all your answers.

Kind regards,

FrankSchleck,

First, you may probably referring API RP 521 5 edition. Latest issue is API STD 521 2007. There parameters involve... Quick check HERE...

"Sun area"... Difficult question...

Microscopic view...surface facing sun have high intensity while surface behind would have zero (infact is not as radiation is wave and it will reach the surface behind...).

Macroscopic view...a vessel is just small "dot" as compare to "Sun". So the intensity at any point has not different...

The only advice is take the conservative apporach. Don't think the rate is excessive...
