Hi,

I'm trying to size a flash separation column for a methanol production plant. I've done this by using the Souders-Brown equation. The feed into the flash separator is a mix of gases and liquid methanol and liquid water. The flash separation column is currently designed to operate at 9 bar and 313 Kelvin. I've used the average density of the gases and the average density of the liquids in the Souders-Brown equation. I think the problem is that the design pressure gives too low a 'k' value to be used in the Souders-Brown equation, leading to a low superficial velocity, which ultimately leads to a high diameter. I'm trying to get a flash column height:diameter ratio of 3:4. I'm not sure if this is possible for this system so I've uploaded my Excel spreadsheet and any help and/or criticism is encouraged!

Cheers,
