Hello,
My name is Sani and I am an operations engineer working at a fertilizer complex in Pakistan. For ammonia production we are using Foster Wheeler designed primary reformer which is a "Side Fired, Terrace Wall Furnace". During start-ups we use the conventional method of firing i.e. inserting an ignition torch through the ignition doors. This technique, being old, is quite time consuming.
Is there any other technique available which we can adopt in our system to make this firing process better? Waiting for your expert opinions.
Best regards,
Sani.

As recommended by Mr. Toor, a BMS (Burner Management System) is a reliable option. Installing a BMS need some extra details in your existing system, these are:
1) Fixed Ignitors at the burners. These shall be electrically operated.
2) Pilot & main flame scanners, to verify flame.
3) Block & Bleed Shut-down valve system at each individual main gas / pilot line, in order to completely automatic the burner lighting process.
4) A BMS logic in your PLC for carrying out the automatic burner lighting process.
Another option may be only installling fixed ignitors, but to be actuated only from the field, and the 'light-on' to be verified visually at site just as in the case of portable ignitors. Safe light-up procedures need to be ensured manually in this case.
Refer attachment also, it might be helpful.
