Hi,
Currently, I'm designing Acetic Acid plant using the Cativa process. Encountering some problems and would like some advices on that.
The methanol and carbon monoxide carbonylation process to acetic acid requires homogeneous Iridium complex catalyst which HYSYS or Unisim don't have it. According to the patents, the catalyst will flow out of the reactor and get separated at the flash tank as a liquid stream and recycled back to the reactor. Since I don't have that particular component in HYSYS, I cannot simulate the catalyst being separated from the product stream at the flash tank. Is there anything that I can do to go about this issue? And are there any information on the iridium carbonyl catalyst if there is a need to do a hypothetical component for this catalyst in HYSYS/UniSim? Thanks in advance.

Do you need to account for the catalyst in HYSYS if it completely recovered in the liquid stream from the flash tank and recycled back to the reactor? Can you just include in a seperate mass and energy balance outside of HYSYS to account for the catalyst, say in Excel?

I don't have specific experience for this acetic acid application, but for a similar case involving a licensor technology reactor I used the component splitter in HYSYS to mimic yield information and component separations where it was not possible to include in the simulation directly.

The other option that you mentioned is to create a hypothetical component in HYSYS to mimic the catalyst, provided that you have all the physical and thermodynamic properties available. Unfortunately I don't have this information for you. Maybe ask the Licensor?

I hope this helps.

Dear Chemlearn,

Yes you will have to make a hypothetical component. I did my bachelors thesis on Cativa Process, although it is not a hi fi thesis but it is good and has good refereneces of patents where I think you will be able to find some information on the iridium catalyst. If you can post your email add, I will be able to send my thesis in pdf format to you.

Hope that this is of any help.

Regards

Also try to view check the references mentioned in this wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia..../Cativa_process

I believe there is a pdf file in there that can be helpful. I wish you well.

When I modeled this(Aspen Plus) I used conversions as they are available in literature. The cativa process is propriatary so you will not get much info and conversions are the way to go. As for modeling the catalyst, I neglected it. The only thing you should care about in the recycle is the carryover and understand that there is catalyst.

Hello.

I'm currently a fourth year engineering student.

I have as my final year project is the production of acetic acid, and we have to use aspen Hysys or Aspen plus for the design of the plant.

We are going with the cativa method as our route of production.

But we are stuck at finding the kinetics of the reaction. And it's been more than a week trying to get them.

I was wondering if anyone can provide any help regarding the kinetics of the reaction.

It would be much appreciated.

Thanks !

Can you please send me it also??

I have a project regard the production of AA and Cativa is our route.

We are stuck on the kinetics of the reaction, we can't Proceed with Hysys unless we know the kinetics.

Anything will be much appreciated !

This is my email: shaheedelfarra@gmail.com

Thanks !!!

Hey,

I have run to a similar problem. Can you please email me anything tat you think can help me through the process?

My goal is to produce acetic acid from methanol. The overall process is natural gas to syngas through partial oxidation, then syngas to methanol production. The last sept is o go from methanol to acetic acid.

If you can email me anything to help me with ASPEN Plus set-up of the cativa process, please do so at shahketul26@gmail.com

Thank you!
