Dear Sirs,

We are designing a fire fighting system for a crude oil tank farm per NFPA Code.

Accordaing to NFPA regulation (i.e. NFPA 13, Table 11.2.3.1.2. & NFPA 16, 2.3.1.1.) 2 hour-water storage for hydrant and 1 hour-water storage for foam facility is required.

My question is:"What to do after 2 hours?"

Should we keep in our design a provision for additional/permanent water supply source i.e. installation of sea water intake structure to cope with the fire after 2 hours?

Thanks in advance

To me it appears that:

  • Ideally it is considered that Fire suppression and/or controls will be achieved in this duration; further,
  • NFPA assumes Municipal, City Fire Service, or other beefed up/fortifying resources will be coming for support within 2 hours.
  • NFPA never bars or restricts any or all extra resources if it is considered feasible or mandatory by the AHJ.
