Hi,

my teacher tasked me with this problem and I have cracked my brains but to no avail. lets say u are given a spray absorption column. The aim of this absorption tower is to scrub SO2 from the exhaust gas by using washwater of 20% Na2SO4 in a counter current fashion. The exhaust gas will be flowing upwards while the washwater is being sprayed downwards in a conical fashion. How do I do the mass transfer/balance for this?

The information I have:

for the exhaust gas: Temperature, volumetric flow rate, mole% composition, density, mass flow rate.

for the washwater: the volumetric flow rate, density, mass flow rate, temperature and 20% Na2SO4.

I have searched the net for spray absorption column but all the calculations and methods are based on packed or tray columns. Can the kind souls in here guide me to a direction so that i can read up or at least have an understanding of the situation and the equations applicable to this situation

Thanks,

Regards,

Mixednuts

You can read Coulson and Richardson Vol 6, Chapter 11.14.2 onwards.

You can also read Mass Transfer Operations by Robert Treybal

This spreadsheet will be helpful

http://www.cheresour...crubber-design/

Just because its a solution doesnt mean the equations used will be completely different.
