Guys,

Just want to go over something i learnt a long time ago.

Fouling in a HEN, increases HEN utility requirements as the efficiency decreases, but what is the technical reason for this?

What effect would fouling have on the stream temperatures?

HEN stands for Heat Exchanger Network :  a network of heat exchangers linked in series or parallel. For sure the fouling increases the utility requirements and surely decreases the heat exchanger efficiency. Certainly the global efficiency heat exchanger coefficient decreases with the fouling, as represents a new barrier on the walls that costs energy consumption and temperature decrease. With less temperature difference, lesser heat exchanging.

The attached paper by Charlie Gilmour is the best information on fouling that, in my opinion, anyone has written about fouling in heat exchangers, what it is, how to prevent it, and how to avoid it.  No one has come up with anything better than this writeup - and everything Charlie wrote about still applies to this date.  This paper is a classic and recognized by all those that are considered experts in the field.

Study it and apply everything you learn from it.
