In some documents which introduce about UOP Sulfolane process, I see one or two internal reboilers in the recovery column. Internal reboiler make a significant increase in column diameter or height of column. it is difficult to repair and clean this type of reboiler. I don't know why they use internal reboiler in this situation. Who can help me give an explanation? Thanks you so much...

You can find UOP Sulfolane process in Handbook of petroleum refining processes (chapter 2.2)

Please refer to the following thread:

I don’t know what your interest is in a proprietary process (UOP is the owner of the Sulfolane Process), but if you are interested in finding out more information about it, you should contact the owner, UOP.  They have all the answers and are the best and most accurate source of information regarding their process.  We on the Forum are not experts in the UOP design – and even if we were, we would be bound by secrecy agreements.

Mr Art Montemayor

Actually, designing the recovery column in UOP sulfolane process is my project. I redesign it base on my knowledge which I were taught in my university but some particular features of the recovery column in sulfolane unit isn't changed, for example, using a stab-in reboiler. This is the first time I see a stab-in reboiler and I don't know why it is used.

Can you tell me which situation we can use stab-in reboiler? it is usually operated with how much is a heat duty of reboiler?

Thanks you

You are a student and I repeat: if you are interested in finding out more information about the Sulfolane Process, you should contact the owner, UOP.  They have all the answers and are the best and most accurate source of information regarding their process.

If your instructor told you to design a Sulfolane process, then shame on him/her.  Every serious engineer (and professor) knows it is proprietary and requires a license to have and operate it.  If you selected it as your project, then I am afraid you will have to change your project because you don’t have much of a chance of obtaining the information you are seeking from UOP in a legal manner.  If you obtain it from someone else besides UOP, then I believe it would be illegal.  Check this out with your instructor and he/she will confirm this.
