I have a few questions.

  • Do we actually dilute methanol with water before injection into natural gas stream to depress hydrate formation temperature?
  • Why do we introduce water into the methanol before injection? Whats the chemistry behind it?
  • Is it a waste of methanol to injection it in its pure form without diluting it?

Responses will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

andysevor,

Your observation regarding dilution of MeOH as a hydrate formation depressant is not correct. MeOH is injected as a 100% pure liquid in natural gas streams for hydrate formation depression.

MEG (Monoethylene Glycol), DEG (Diethylene Glycol) and TEG (Triethylene Glycol) when used as hydrate formation inhibitors are used as water-based solutions. All the aforementioned three chemicals are much more expensive than MeOH. Also DEG and TEG have high viscosities at ambient conditions of low temperatures. These factors relate to their being diluted with water and forming a water-based solution before injection as hydrate formation inhibitors.

Thank you very much, Ankur. You saved me a lot of argument on this subject.  A colleague of mine simulated  a methnol injection system with hysys. He realized anytime diluing methanol with water and injection it purely gave the same amount of depression in hydrate formation temperature. Thats how the confusion started.

I'm guessing its because the liquid phase methanol concentration was still higher than the Hmamerschmidt minimum even when he injected diluted methanol.

Thanks.

Andy

One of the best ways I've seen modeling Methanol Injection:
