Hello everyone!

 

I am currently embarking on a Final Year Project to design an Ethane Cracker for ethylene production and was hoping to get some advice. I found that there aren't any books specific to designing an Ethane Cracker but rather, a fired-heater or furnace. Would appreciate it a lot if there are any titles of books or articles that could greatly benefit me. Thank you!

Google ethylene with Karl Stork. It's an old book, but still relevant.

Hello Bobby,

 

I have looked at the book you recommend and also other furnace books e.g. Direct FIred Heaters by Roger Newnham. I found that the design is more suited to a regular furnace rather than an ethylene pyrolysis furnace. The graphs and values used are out of range for my design. Hope that you could assist. Thanks!

Ethane cracking is a licensed process. Best known licensors are:

CB&I Lummus

KBR

Linde

Technip

 

Each licensor has his own, very specific, cracking heater design and they do not publish any details about that, and they certainly not explain how an outsider could design such furnace. Note also that a cracking heater is actually a reactor in which the ethane is converted into ethylene and heavier components in endothermic reactions. The radiant coil design in an ethane cracker is optimised to maximise the selectivity towards ethylene production, minimising production of heavier components.

 

Also the rest of the process, in which the various components from the heater effluent are cooled, treated and separated, is licensed and therefor kept confidential.

 

I am sorry to say, but you should have realised that before you chose the subject for your FYP.
