when the outlet of the centrifugal pump is closed it cannot create more pressure, so it do not require PSV, i have a doubt on this, if the outlet valve is closed then where does the inlet fluid will go without pressurizing the downstream pipe. pls explain.

Hi,
Part of it will go back through the internal recirculation...

In centrifugal pump, fluid gets kinetic energy from the rotating impeller by the action of centrifugal force. As the fluid exerts out from the tip of impeller, it has more kinetic energy (has more velocity). As the impeller is placed eccentrically, the velocity of fluid reduces gradually and pressure starts increasing in the volute casing. As you close the discharge valve of pump, all the kinetic energy from the fluid is converted in to pressure( since velocity and pressure are inversely proportional). Hence, the hold up fluid will jus get agitated inside the casing.
