Hi,

What is the purpose of providing restriction orific (RO) on the blowdown line. One of my supplier has only provided actuated blowdown valve without any RO.

Please suggest

Shekhar,

It depends on what type of blowdown valve is supplied.  If a ball valve is used for blowdown, it has no ability to restrict the blowdown flow, so the RO is used to control the blowdown rate.  If no RO is provided the system can depressure too fast, which will result in a larger flare being required (or overload an existing flare), potential overcooling of the system materials due to gas expansion, and  possible lifting of bulk media beds (eg molecular sieve beds).

Sometimes a globe style control valve is used as a blowdown valve that can be configured to control the blowdown rate.  In this case the RO is not required.

shekhar,

The purpose of using RO in blowdown lines is restriction of blowdown peak flow rate at desired value based on flare network capability. If a full bore on/off ball valve is to be used, then the RO can be used at the ball valve downstream either in fit to fit connection (if there is no concern about subsequent low temperature condition) or with a distance, say 600 mm, farther. In former case, when there is no low temperature concern, the ball valve and RO can be combined in the form of reduced bore ball valve alone without any RO at downstream. In such cases, mentioned reduced bore blowdown valve not only plays the role of the isolation valve from the flare network but also plays the role of restriction the flow outgoing to flare network ....
