Psv Sizing For Fire Case

I want to do PSV sizing for fire case wetted wall for Hydrocyclone. PSV is fitted on the Hydrocyclone which is treating produced water. I dont have LAHH value for the hydrocyclone. How to size the PSV fitted on the hydrocyclone? I have not done PSV sizing for hydrocyclone earlier. Pls explain.

Hi,

 

The basic of PSV sizing for fire case included in API 521 regardless of equipment type and function. If you have an specific question on a specific system such as you described please upload a simple sketch of it to get proper response...

Krishnamurthy,

A hydrocyclone is a completely water-filled vessel, there is no liquid level and the oil content is very small.  You should check at what temperature the water will boil at the relief set pressure. If the heat input is enough to reach that temperature,in a short time, then the relief case will be for steam flow at the rate of heat input from the fire.

Because a hydrocyclone is a relatively small tube with a small volume for its surface area, it is likely that the fire will cause the water to reach its boiling point very fast.
