Hi,
Petroleum Refinery Crude distillation mainly differs from conventaional distillation in one aspect i.e. number of components. These components are grouped together and called cuts with certain IBP and FBP. The various distillation points are done to analyze the product quality for further use or process. The standard distillation points are 10, 30, 50, 70 and 90 % only rest are inter or extrapolated. We can not measure FBP of any cut/product but it is extrapolated with different methods.
IBP - initial boiling point
FBP- final boiling point

As padmaker said, this is a way to know what is this liquid hydrocarbon. This test is based on some standards like ASTM-D86. You can find many useful notes in this standard.
