One of our boiler feedwater pumps was leaking and the mechanical seal was replaced.

I've attached some photos of the issue which shows a strong discolouration of the metal where the o-ring/gasket sits. I want to understand why this happened for my own learning and see if we can avoid this occurring again.

The seal flush is on the suction side - "plan 13" flush arrangement.

I need some advice on what possible failures could have lead to this.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sam
