Hi Everyone,

A closed loop cooling water system is provided with a corrosion inhibitor injection system and is having carbon steel piping, This system supplies cooling water to many exchangers which may lead to H2S contamination into the system as a result of pin hole leakage. Total number of such exchangers identified as 6 to 8.

H2S once entrained into the system will remain in the system and the water would be more acidic/corrosive in nature.

My understanding is PH analyzer should continuously monitor water quality and depending on requirement should result in corrosion inhibitor dosing to keep circulation safe from corrosion to carbon steel piping. No additional side stream filter is required to adsorb H2S which may ingress as a result of pin hole leakage from time to time.

Kindly advice whether corrosion inhibitor alone could be useful against H2S contamination which may build up inside the system maximum upto saturation level.

Regards.

Well, I suppose you could add some base to the water to balance the pH. Maybe that is what they call corrosion inhibitor...

Also, some H2S may actually cause the formation of Ferrous Sulfide on the skin of the pipe, which will also inhibit corrosion.

I would just monitor the pH and either blowdown the water at some point or add a base.
