What is Blow down valve (BDV) and its purpose? When should a BDV be used for a process vessel?

Hi,

API 521 is  good getting started to understand the blowdown valve and its function...

But, in brief, it's an on/off valve to be opened manually or automatically in order to depressuring a pressurized vessel on which the valve has already been installed...

As per API 521 it should be considered for the large vessels with the operating pressure higher than 1700 kPag and are subject to a pool fire...
