Hello

First post on this site and would appreciate your help on the following.

Working on a small disulfide sand filter  - designed to remove entrained caustic from wash oil saturated with disulfides. We are providing the sand filter to the EPC and part of the requested design is a chordal baffle to protect the traeted liquid outlet. The outlet is positioned just below the support screen, allowing the filtered liquid to settle before exiting the vessel. We have been requested to include a chordal baffle to protect the outlet, the liquid exiting the filter sand at that section of the vessel with run off the baffle before settle in the bottom of the vessel.

Just wondering what a chordal baffle is and why it would have been specifically requested for this application.

thank you in advance.

I think what is meant is a baffe like I indicated in red on the (simplistic) sketch for sideview and topview:

Dotted line is interface between oily liquid (above) and caustic liquid (below).

The baffle avoids that caustic drops coming from the sand bed can enter the oily liquid outlet nozzle on the side.

that was my interpretation however the request is specifically for a chordal type baffle....just wondering if this has any other special features.

Not sure what special features would be required on this type of baffle, apart from maybe spanning the full internal of the vessel (vessel is small, 24" diameter.

What I drew is a chordal baffle (with a closed top).

However if you feel uncertain about what is meant, you should ask the EPC contractor.
