Tank Pressure During Unloading

Dear experts:

There is a storage tank with N2 blanketing system which consists of a PCV and a vacuum breaker PSV.

During the unloading, tank pressure reaches to vacuum breaker set pressure and that is why instead of N2, air goes to the tank.

My question is that. What is the role of PCV during unloading?

Is it ok to allow air interring the tank?

Dear Rohollah,

 

The PCV for N2 blanketing is undersized; then the vacuum breaker has to be opened to compensate the shortage of PCV capacity in required N2 provision during tank unloading...

 

And no, it's not ok to allow air enters to the tank other than in the rare cases due to unexpected process or operation upsets...

Dear Fallah

I do believe that the PCV is undersized and cannot keep the tank in normal pressure.

So how can we calculate and resize a new PCV?

Dear Rohollh,

 

You only need to specify the operating conditions and especially unloading rate accurately and leave the sizing and selection of the PCV to vendor...If the unloading rate hasn't been changed (increased) respect to the design stage it might hadn't accurately been specified for vendor in mentioned stage...

Rohollah,

 

Fallah is correct. I also think that you should evaluate the vent set point in relation to your tank MAWV. Use as low a vacuum setting that is safe for your tank.(When I say low, I am referring to abosolute values.) Further be sure that your vent is unobstructed for flow including the tank nozzle size.

 

Also,  read API 2000 and then calculate the vacuum venting requirement. This should give you a result that makes sense from your experience. Then you can increase the size of your vent to meet your draw off needs. If you have to use the existing nozzle for the new vent, be sure to take into account that this will produce a pressure drop when flowing which will reduce the vent flow due to the decrease in delta P across the vent.
