My friend and I noticed possible profits on a market by designing such a stuff, so there is a reason.  ;)

Task:

Fixed bed batch distillation column

- Mass balance of column (No feeding, accumulating distillate in external tank)

- Energy balance (Condenser, Reboiler, Pumping, Assuming energy loss-isolation)

- Generated distillate at particular flow rate with desired composition fraction knowing bottoms.

- Height of packings as a function of effective mass transfer surface in a volume a particuliar pieces (as well as porosity)

- Cost of production (amortization of column vs using costs)

Optimization planned as a next task.

The column is to be working as a household

Technically:

I'm having a component with database I'd like to use. Within it goes:

- VLE equation modelled with NRTL (ev. UNIFAQ, UNIQUAC)

- Other correlations for any component properties and binary properties.

Questions:

1. What literature would you stick a topic best?

2. What kind of model is both the easiest to program and ,assuming, how high is a deviation between it and original data. (literature)

3. How would u dig it?

A topic is very open, all opinions are desired. :)

BUT Please stick to the guidelines. Don't answer saying that e.g. Pro/II is a solution.
