Dear Friends,

 

I have some questions about gas recovery line in reciprocating hydrogen compressors, We have 3 Double-acting compressors which in every stage, in the distance piece part, there is a connection called gas recovery. this connection is piped to atm or flare.

 

I want to know the application of gas recovery and the difference of this connection with vent connection. Moreover, I want to know the application of Nitrogen in distance piece.

I have attached a figure of distance piece connections.

Meysam,

 

It is basically a vent system.

Reciprocating compressor packing always leaks, it is necessary to continuously purge the leaking gas out.

Special Thanks to Xavio,

 

I have studied these documents recently, but there is no comment about the difference of Vent connection with Gas Recovery connection.

 

As you can see from the picture, I attached, Gas recovery connection is connected to packing and I do not know why!?

 

Since we have a vent connection that is piped to atm, so it seems that we do not need having gas recovery connection.

 

It would be really appreciated if you could help me.

Xavio is correct.  What you describe is a standard method of venting the packing chambers in reciprocating compressors.  The distance piece is a spacer device specifically designed to allow for venting the leaking gas (especially hydrogen) safely out and away from the operation.

 

I've installed and operated many hydrogen reciprocating compressors and every one has used a vent connection on the distance piece (which is normally sealed).  In 54 years I've never heard of - or seen - a gas recovery connection on the packing gland of a reciprocating compressor.   Who made your compressor and what is its name and model?

Meysam,

 

Your "gas recovery" connection is piped to atm or flare, so it is basically a purge or vent, you don't recover anything.

All recip compressors that I've encountered are also designed like this.

 

I've read that if your suction side is vacuum, you may pipe the purge connection back to suction, thus justifying the name "gas recovery".

Of course, you should make sure first if the purge gas (usually N2 but it can be any gas) is compatible with your process gas.

Thank Art Montemayor and Xavio for helping,

 

As Art Montemayor requested, Our Compressor Producer is Nuovo Pignone, Model: 4HA/4, Non-lubricated, 4 Stages.

 

In our document that connection (Gas Recovery) is called gas recovery which purge by N2. Based on my assessment it seems that this connection is just for purging the leakage of packing before interring the Cylinder-Compartment. If Hydrogen gas leakage increased and passed the packing, this gas would be vented by vent connection placed in Cylinder-Compartment. Am I right!?
