Dear All,

Due to process exchanger's tube leak/rupture, H2S could ingress into refinery CW system. If this is not noticed then H2S conc could reach more than 50 ppm inside CW system.

Is it possible to use water soluble scavengers to remove H2S from cooling water system ? H2S is a weak acid and this would dissociate into H+ and HS- . Please advise whether H2S scavenger would be useful for CW system contamination.

Regards,

Cooling water is chlorinated. Chlorine oxidizes Hydrogen sulfide to free sulfur. Your chlorine consumption would increase if there is any hydrogen sulfide. You can check water for hydrogen sulfide. If there is any, increase chlorine dozing.

Dear Mr. Rao,

CW system is using demin water and no chlorine dosing is provided. Only corrosion inhibitor and biocide dosing are provided. Please advise whether H2S scavenger will be effective for removing dissolved H2S in water.H2S is weak acid and could attack iron.

Regards

Hydrogen peroxide is another chemical which reacts with Hydrogen sulfide at ambient temerature without leaving any solid residue. You may try. I do not know in which equipment you are using DM water for cooling. Any way, I believe, you have to investigate and stop the leakage before it escalates the problem..
