hello all,

I'm taking a course in "Security and management of chemical plants" and I was given the task of dealing with the disposal of hospital waste, with particular regard to the disposal of mercury contained therein. In this regard, I would ask, with extreme courtesy, if you can get information about the management of the collection and transportation (and thus in terms of regulation) and the technologies used nowadays in this context.

Thanks in advanced

Domenico

It depends on how the mercury is present in the waste, free from or compound form. If it is in free form, the task is simple, just water gravitation. Place the waste in water in a tank  and agitate thoroughly  Mercury will settle at the bottom.  If the mercury is present in complex form, like mercury compounds then it is more complicated to separate. You have to incinerate the waste, Collect the ash, and dispose it off by deep land fill far away from water bodies and far  away from cattle grazing  areas.
