Hello! I am designing an absorption column and stripper to capture CO2 from flue gas from a coal power plant (around 300 MW power production). The solvent to use is 30% wt monoethanolamine.

 

Given the following conditions:

Flue Gas flowrate: 2517 tons/hr

CO2 flowrate: 450 tons/hr

Flue gas pressure: 1.2 bar

Flue gas temperature: 40 deg C

MEA flowrate: 7551 tons/hr.

 

What type of column should I use (packed or tray)? The flowrates described above are very large, in this case, should I use multiple absorbers in parallel? Consider also the economics. It would be of great help if you can have comments about this design. Thank you!

It sounds like you already have the design. All you need to do is size the column. The number of columns depends on logistics. Are the roads near the plant wide enough for a 5m vessel? Once you answer those types of questions, you can size your column to fit within those bounds. Of course the absorber will also need to be around 70% flooded.

It really doesn't matter. They are pretty close to one another. Trays are easier to do by hand and generally last longer than packing.

Since the Capacity high It is recommends to used packed column. Tray column will give higher diameter for the same capacity.
