Hi all,

Can anyone advise what is difference between Gas Engine and Gas Turbine ?  What are the guide lines to select either one of the machine.

What are the applications where Gas Engines is the Best selection.

Thanks

Hi kriss,

In general, Gas engine converts reciprocating action into rotary where as in turbine, hot combustive gases strikes turbine blade which rotates the rotor. There are gas engines which are called "rotary engines".

1. Gas engines used in motor vehicles, generators, ships, etc.

2. Gas engines are relatively cheap compared to gas turbine.

3. Power to weight ratio is less for gas engines compared to gas turbine. Thus, for same capacity of gas engine, gas turbine is relatively small.

4. Gas turbine exhaust comes out with higher temperature which can be fed to a boiler to generate steam (combined cycle)

5. Gas engines can be started easily.

6. Gas turbines are less efficient at lower speeds.

7. Many types of fuels can be used for gas turbines.

Based on the above, you can select which conditions are optimum for your need.
