Dear colleagues

"Fixed roof and floating roof "

Which one is better to use for crude oil

Fixed roof with gas blanket or floating roof

My second question is for fixed roof tank, which media is better to use for blanketing?

Nitrogen or fuel gas.

some engineer said fuel gas is better than the nitrogen ,because it is possible to have present of oxygen on nitrogen even we use and the risk of explosion  for using the nitrogen is more that the fuel gas

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike

Normally we use floating roof tank for crude oil. Crude oil usually has some vapor pressure due to the dissolved gas in the oil. Fixed roof tank is usually used for (very) low vapor pressure fluid.

Selection of tank depends on vapor pressure of hydrocarbon being stored. Floating roof tank minimizes vapor loss to atmosphere hence preferred. However they are suitable for vapor pressure up to 10 PSI.

For fixed roof tank, nitrogen is preferred as it is inert gas. However nitrogen quality has to be maintained.

Mike,

Fluid properties, especially vapor pressure, and ambient temperature variation would dictate the type of storage tank in which mentioned fluid is to be stored.

Anyway, fixed roof is to be applied for max vapor pressure up to around 1 psia and floating roof for max vapor pressure around 11 psia.

Selection between N2 and Fuel Gas for blanketing has to be evaluated by considering several parameters such as availability, fluid type and properties,...
