Dear All,

 

I am operating a CO2 flue gas recovery plant in Pakistan.  I want to find out if it is safe to add copper carbonate to the monoethanolamine  solution to prevent corrosion.  If yes, in what quantities??.

 

Another question is how to monitor water/monoethanolamine concentration as my plant is very small and we do not have any lab facility.  Can a gravity meter be used for this purpose?

The wisest thing you can do to an MEA acid gas removal solution is to NEVER ADD ANYTHING to it - except pure MEA.  The water should be as pure as you can obtain - without dissolved solids or any other chemicals.  The color of the MEA solution (preferably between 12 -15% wt. MEA in strength) should be a slight yellowish color and maintained by way by using activated carbon filters in the lean MEA solution flow stream together with an MEA solution reclaimer system operating continuously and purifying the lean MEA from the reboiler.  All this is carefully explained in detail in the book I always recommend anyone operating an acid gas plant: Gas Purification by Kohl and Nielsen.  You should obtain this text and study it every day - as well as following your instruction in the Plant's Operation and maintenance manual (which you should have if you bought your plant from an experienced and capable designer/fabricator).

 

You should be titrating your MEA solution daily to test for its strength - just as you should be continuously analyzing your flue gas stream almost every hour.  You do not need a dedicated lab facility to operate an efficient and profitable CO2 recovery plant - I did it for many years with my plant operators doing the testing and analyzing.  You should be able to do the same today - with better efficiency because of the vast improvement in the instrumentation and technology.

Art is absolutely right. I would only add that proper corrosion control is mostly done by maintaining the right loadings of CO2/amine on the liquid side of the plant. For MEA, you should not exceed 0.3 mol/mol. I would not add anything to the solvent.
