Dear all,

In API 610 Material Selection guideline, it is described that for Naphtha and temperature under 230 degC, Class S-1 material will be used.

This means that for Naphtha, cast Iron impeller material may be used. Our client specified Class S-6 which is an overspecification based on API 610.

Does anyone have experience using Class S-1 material at this moment with any experience to share about material selection? Are there any issues with the use of Class S-1 material for naphtha service?

If your client is paying the bill, why not supply the material he has requested?

Because there is responsibility on our part to highlight overspecifications.

Also working with a budget, the savings can be transferred to other areas of the project.

API 610 also states that S-3 or S-6 materials should be used if there is a presence of process water in Naphtha stream (reflux stream, product draw-off etc.), for temperatures below 175 degC. The class S-1 assumes virtually clean Naphtha stream, which may or may not be the case in your application.

I see your point. Thank you very much for your reply.

Naphtha we are working with is bought from the spot market (not produced).

Thus if S-3 is sufficient for these services, perhaps S-6 is not required.
