How to find out Stripping steam quantity in main Distillation Columns and side Strippers Of HSD and Kerosene(Calculation Required) ?

As Watkins used 8-10 % steam to bottom ratio for main distillation column? Is it accurate?

IS any other relation or thumb rule to find out the amount of Stripping steam in columns?

Watkins figures can be a starting point.

As a rule-of-thumb steam to the strippers is 50% of the bottom one (so you can start with 3-5%).

Starting quantities shall be optimized since the needed quantities depend from the crude, the tower and the operation.

You can progressively lower your initial quantities and measure the effect on the product qualities:

- ASTM gap/overlap and 95% point

- freeze point of kero

- flash point of gasoil

- quantity of Heavy Gasoil in Atmospheric Residue

When the observed qualities start to be unacceptable you have found your optimal point (for that operation).

Some strippers (especially on the lighter products) don't need steam at all (but, again, it depends from the tower design and the specific operation.

Look at "Handbook of Petroleum Processing" by David S.Jones, Chapter 3, Section "Side streams". Calculation procedure is available as well.
