Hi everyone,

I'm checking the feasibility of adding to more user to our hot oil system (heat duty, volume...), the main problem to connect those to heat exchanger is that theirs design pressure (12 barg) is lower than the actual discharge pressure of the hot oil recirculating pump (13 barg).

My question :

1. is it possible to install any means (pressure valve) to drop the pressure just upstream the connection line feeding those two exchangers and keep the actual network working as it is?

2. what king of protection is to be installed to avoid overpressurising those two exchanger?

Thanks in advance

badj,

1- Appears it's possible..

2- Pressure relieving device...

But, to get a proper and precise reply please upload a simple sketch of the system along with the additional info...

Theoretically it can be done, but it doesn't sound like the best possible idea. A detailed operational and hazard analysis would have to be done to assess feasibility of this solution and to address all possible hazards which may be introduced with the new equipment.

As Fallah says, overpressure protection needs to be provided for the new unit/equipment.

Thanks Fallah & Zauberbeg,

Please find attached a sketch of the hot oil system.

I'm thinking to install a pressure drop valve in the new connection line, and as a protection pressure relieving device or a HIPPS will be adequat.

Of course the modification has to go through a formal hazop as a part of the management of change procedure.

The P&ID is unclear, see if you can upload the original PDF file. What is the purpose of the existing PC on discharge of the pump? Seems like this controller and the recycle valve can be used to set the pressure in the hot oil network.

Can you tolerate possible contamination of the fluid in the 2 new exchangers, in case of a tube rupture?

Is there enough duty in the hot oil heater and sufficient capacity of the pump to serve all consumers at the maximum/rated duty?
