Hello there,

how would i go about calculating the volume a gas occupies, when it is chilled and compressed into a liquid?

i.e hydrogen, nitrogen etc.

 

could i do this.

acquire density of the gas at the cryogenic temperature and pressure (using HYSYS and the PR EOS), and then do a simple mass/density calculation?

Unless there is something important you have left out, then, yes, you can simply obtain the liquid density by one method or another. Then volume=mass/density.

 

The main concern I would have is how accurate do you need this to be? I would be somewhat concerned using the PR EOS for liquid densities of quantum gases like H2. Checking this using NIST's REFPROP program, the PR could be in error by upwards of 10% for the liquid density of H2. You might want to research equations for the liquid density to decide which one will be most applicable to the gases you are interested in, but your basic premise is correct.
