I solve optimization problems with a thermo library (Prode Properties) which links directly with MATLAB,

that means that MATLAB calls the library for solving a polytropic stage (or different operations) during optimization,

passing values and getting results,

according my experience this works fine for most problems,

I use MATLAB and Mathcad (a old version) and interfaces with Prode are available for both.

I do not know which mechanism you adopt to exchange data but guessing from your comments it seems you cannot arrange a efficient solver in that way.

May be you may consider to use directly the simulator to optimize values...
