When treating typical industrial effluents with aerobic bacteria what are typical COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) values that can be accepted as input streams?

 

Also, how low  a COD is it reasonable to expect at the outlet of bio-treatment without any downstream polishing units such as Reverse Osmosis or Advanced Oxidation?

 

I'm trying to estimate in a preliminary design how much of extraction is needed from an aqueous effluent stream contaminated with organics before it might be reasonable to expect bio-treatment to work on the residual organics. 

 

PS. None of the organics are acutely toxic. They only contribute to overall oxygen demand.

Hi ,
In my plant from 12000 ppm down to 200 ppm using air blower (aerobic treatment).

More questions:

 

(1) Just to clarify, you mean bio-treatment, not just air stripping, correct? i.e. The organics are getting "eaten up" by microorganisms?

 

(2) What's the approximate treatment capacity. i.e. How many m3 of 12000 ppm load can the unit handle, say, per 24 hrs? And for this what is the size of the treatment basin / tank that you have?

Hi ,

150-200 m3/day ; 2 tanks in serie ( 100 m3 /unit), rectangle shape , equipped with 1 blower each and distributors at the bottom of the tanks to distribute fine bubbles of air (network covering the entire bottom part of the tank , every 50 cm a distributor ( round membrane of elastomer with pin holes ). Yes it is a bio treatment ( bugs and air + sun) .

Effluent is mainly residue from our acetyl salicylic plant  .

Prior to Bio treatment The Ph is adjusted with Caustic soda 50% to 6 to 7 .
