Hi! I would like to know what is the importance on why structured packings is being used in vacuum pipestill instead of trays? Is this related to ensuring that vacuum is being maintained in the tower?

very briefly... structured packing has less pressure drop than trays at equal theoretical stages but, more important, has better contacting performances when liquid phase is scarce, like in vacuum tower applications.
tons of detailed info are available by searching this site and on the web.
