I have a question about a centrifugal pump. Why centrifugal pumps does not have relief valve????

Vanessa,

It might even a centrifugal pump needs relief valve at discharge, say, when the discharge line haven't been designed for pump shut off pressure and discharge line blockage to be a credible scenario...

If you see in most cases there is no relief valve at discharge line of centrifugal pumps, it's because relevant discharge lines are being designed per pumps shut off pressure and also there are adequate protection layers against discharge line blockage such as minimum flow line and FSLL for pump trip at a prespecified set point...

for me, normally centrifugal pump come together with minimum flow line and by having minimum flowline over pressure normally will not happened.

it really depends on the application of the centrifugal pump and how they protect the over pressure during design stage. some application letsay for simple not hazardous system like loading and loading pump which is manned operation, it is not protected as operation will be there during loading and unloading. some system has PT where when it detect overpressure, it will trip the pump.

For firewater pump, based on NFPA, it require relief valve especially diesel driven.

if the discharge side is not designed for pump shutoff then there can be a relief valve provided
