Hi,

Does a priming system is essential for centrifugal pump, other than start up situation. for example if we are transferring from one tank to another tank. The tank from which pump suck the fluid will not be empty completely, say liquid will be above the bell mouth. In this case do we need to prime pump each time during start up.

Thanks in advance

Arun

Arun ,
This subject has been discussed many time , consider using the search engine in this forum .
The risk is about cavitation & vapor lock.

Hope this helps

Arun,

If pump trips on LL liquid level then it might there would be no need priming per each start up; otherwise before each start up the requirement to priming should be checked

Yes in a centrifugal pump priming is required.

If the discharge pressure is rated pressure and is stable, you no need to do priming. Else you have to do priming. I have seen for a cooling tower circulation pump where the discharge pressure keep on hunting during start up thought the pump is flooded (pump is below the cooling tower water basin). Due to lack of sufficient head in water basin, air is getting entrapped at every start up.
