Hello everyone,

I have a gas engine that producing about 600'C of exhaust gas. If I want to design waste heat boiler that using an exhaust gas from gas engine. Does anyone have a project guide or design calculation where should I start to design waste heat boiler?

Thank you for your response.

Best regards,

Hafidh

There are companies that specialize in just this application, a quick internet search will give you lots of options. I would suggest you contact one of them.

There is/was an author of waste heat articles named V. Ganapathy. He published the articles in Hydrocarbon Processing.

There will need to be a row of fin tubes inside the duct work that carries the exhaust gas. These tubes carry the water to and from the boiler which sits atop the duct. To estimate the number of tube rows across the duct , use 0.12 sqrt(flow) in lb/hr.

Indeed.

And he also wrote two books that I know of (and maybe more):

Industrial Boilers and Heat Recovery Steam Generators Design, Applications, and Calculations (Marcel Dekker 2003)

Steam Generators and Waste Heat Boilers For Process and Plant Engineers (CRC Press 2014)

You may find some interesting books but I have the experience it is not really easy!

If you have access to documents of other projects try to find similar cases as a guideline. usually output of steam methane reformers are equipped with heat recovery boilers. Also reformers ducts!

I agree with others. you need vendors help.

Also relative altitude of steam drum is very important.

good luck

I have been working as a senior process engineer on  basic and detail design of methanol plant. In that project we used heat recovery boilers to recover energy from produced syngas. I tried to design the boiler and relevant steam drum based on available handbooks.  it was really difficult. finally I decided to prepare a duty spec and we asked professional vendors for recommendations.

Dear Breizh,

I have tried to learn from your link, but I still dont understand what I should to do next. And then in my calculation there will be 744 kW of waste heat available from gas engine.

Best Regards,

Hafidh

It has been yeas since I designed a waste heat boiler. There has probably been some changes since then. Here is what we used then:

A 5 % blowdown was used. If the steam temperature was less than 335 F, a recirculation rate of 10/1 was used. Two inch 12 bwg tubing with one inch high fins and 6 fins/inch on 4 1/8 triangular tube pitch was used.
