We add wash water into crude before desalting to make the an emulsion.

My queries are-

1) What are the paramenters that effect the formation of emulsion, and can it

happen that the emulsion may not be formed.?

2) What is the role of mixing valve and how does it work?

The role of a mixing valve is creating enough mixing or shearing to allow for rigorous mixing of oil with wash water. The dP across the valve is the key parameter to make the mixing efficient enough, typically 0.7-1 Bar. Too much pressure drop will result in a stronger emulsion which is then more difficult to be broken in the desalter.

Regarding wash water, in a two stage desalter the wash water could be the effluent water from the 2nd stage.
