What type of pumps are used in the Crude Distillation Unit?

1) Initially from crude storage tank to desalter unit.

2) For the pump arounds in the CDU

I have heard they use Gear or PD pumps..

Is it true? Why?

Dear Jack33,

You can review information about the pump selection in various sources, but initially I recommend the following:

- Neerken, R., "Selecting the Right Pump", Chemical Engineering, April 3, 1978, pages 87-98.

- Karassik I., et. al. Pump Handbook, 3rd. Ed. McGraw-Hill, 2001, Ch. 11: Selecting and Purchasing Pumps.

- Cheremisinoff P., Cheremisinoff N., Process Engineering Data Book, Technomic, 1995, Ch.2.

- Ulrich G., A Guide to Chemical Engineering Process Design and Economics, 1st. Ed., John Willey&Sons, Table 4-20, p. 228 (Spanish edition).

Also I send you information of the web and the chart is from Cole-Parmer Catalog.

The answer to your questions:

1.- If your crude is light centrifugal pump, if crude is heavy gear pump.

2.- Normally centrifugal. Gear or PD is employ principally for viscous liquids (heavy crude oils).

Jack,

I share Napo answer, adding the following rules-of-thumb:

- Whenever is possible, centrifugal pump are used.

- Gear pumps are often used for delivering viscous crudes from tanks to the CDUs. This is a cold service where centrifugal pumps could have too low efficiency because of the high viscosity

- Centrifugal pumps are always used for pumparonds, that are hot services.

good luck
