Tank Vapor Volume For Horizontal Cylindrical Tanks

I am working in the calculation of the thermal in and out-breathing is a function of tank vapor

volume. As per API 2000 for " the tank vapor volume for vertical cylindrical tanks, use of volume based on the tank shell height is acceptable ". However, I would like to know if for horizontal is also acceptable?. Or have I to calculate the horizontal cyclindrical volume tanks considering the liquid level and type of the head?

You are dealing with a cylindrical, horizontal storage tank and you should apply the liquid level criteria that corresponds to such a tank.  API 2000 was written specifically for vertical storage tanks.  The philosophy of venting and tank protection still apply to horizontal models, but the characteristics of the level fluctuations during operation are distinctly very different between both types.

 

I highly recommend you identify the specific liquid levels that exist in your horizontal tank during the different phases of operation and always set your maximum level alarms.  Most horizontal tanks apply an 80 to 90% liquid fill as maximum - depending on the fluid in question.

Thank you for your answer. I have other question: in accordance with API 2000, calculation of the thermal in and out-breathing is a function of tank vapor volume instead to tank liquid volume, therefore the tank volume is a funtion of the vapor space.

Because,  I could not find the direct formula in order to get the horizontal tank vapor volume, I made the calculation assuming the horizontal tank volume when is full  [π x r2 x L] minus the tank liquid volume [1/2 x (r2) x (α- sin (α)) x  L], where:

 

α= 2 x acos (r-h)/h

r=  tank inside radius (m)

L= tank tangent-to-tangent length (m)

h= Liquid height from bottom (m) 

 

Is this assumption ok?, also I would like to know if I have to consider the volume of the tanks head?

If you are a Forums member you can go to our Spreadsheet Library and download for free a copy of Vessel Volume, which will allow you to strap any horizontal tank with a variety of heads.

 

Or, you can go to Bobby Strain's website and use his method of solution.

Find attached the excel sheet used to calculate vapor/ liquid volume of horizontal tank of various heads.
