Hi!

I would like to ask if it is acceptable to use saturated stripping steam instead of superheated stripping steam for a vacuum tower? Wouldn't this pose any damage to the vacuum tower internals? What happened is that the stripping steam production of vacuum pipestill unit (by steam generation section) is lower than required so we would like to admit the saturated stripping steam from header.

Superheated stripping steam being produced has a temperature of 350 deg C and a pressure of 450 KPag.While saturated steam is 150 deg C/400 KPag.

Hi,

 

Effect of lowering stripping steam temperature, 350 C to 150 C, on tower performace should be investigated for your case; but in general saturated steam could be used as stripping steam provided that a knock out pot to be considered at upstream of steam inlet into the tower to remove any condensate droplet. This is to be done avoiding any damage to the vacuum tower internals...

Saturated steam should be avoided, due to likely condensation as a consequence of direct heat transfer inside the tower. Each and every stripping steam application uses superheated steam.
