Hello All,

I understand that moleculare sieves will adsorb molecules on the basis of unsaturation, polarity and size.  What would make CO2 absorb on a 13X type molecular sieve as it has no polarity?

I have read that 13X is a better adsorbent for CO2 compared to a 4/5A type molecular sieve and cannot wrap my head as to why this should be the case.

Can anyone please share some insight - Thank you!

I believe carbon dioxide is an irreversible poison for molecular sieves..

Molecular Sieves are not poisoned by Carbon Dioxide.  This adsorption process ha been used for the last 55 years to simultaneously remove CO2 and water moisture from atmospheric air in order to subsequently liquefy the purified air and distill it into its components, nitrogen, oxygen, and argon.  It is used in other similar processes.

In order to find out the specifics of molecular sieve design and how the adsorbent works (and why), I recommend you do research work in texts and even consult the manufacturer.  The technology of manufacturing Mol Sieves has been, to my knowledge, a closed one.

CO2 can be polarized by cations such as Al3+, K+, Nacontained in molecular sieve. Then CO2 can be adsorbed.
