I came across an interesting equipment described in Minton's excellent book on Evaporators: An evaporative condensor. It seems like a cross between a Shell and Tube and an air cooled HEX.

Is this equipment used in practice? Isn't it sort of like trying to combine a mini cooling tower with your shell and tube? What's the advantage to doing this rather than a conventional CW circuit and a stand alone, centralized, large Cooling Tower.

Is this equipment used in practice?

Yes. Baltimore Aircoil Company is a well known supplier.

Yes, it is.

Process fluid in the tubes is colder (closer to wet bulb temperature) than when using CW from a conventional system.

Probably cheaper if there is only one large CW user. It is however possible to have additional CW from the bottom to supply some other small CW users.

These carry the moniker  WSAC, for wet surface air cooler. Typically the tube and fin material is a stainless steel alloy to handle the corrosive water environment. If you search using the moniker you will find lots of information.
