Hi,

 

First time posting. I have a Batch Distillation Column with an 16,000 US gal Still Pot. The volume of the Still Pot is a bottleneck to our operations. We have a larger volumes of liquid input to the Stillpot at times. Other than upsizing the Still Pot volume, what other changes could I possibly make to increase our Distillation capacity?

 

If I increase the Stillpot volume, what other parameter changes might I have to consider? For example, The Liquid to Vapour ratio may have to change, etc...

Is your batch distillation unit set up as illustrated in the attached illustration I downloaded from the Internet?

If so, then the only thing(s) you should be concerned when having to batch distill a liquid quantity larger than your existing Still Pot capacity are:

• Increase the size of the Still Pot;
• If you intend to maintain the same heat input (and therefore maintain the same overheads rate), then keep the same reboiler coil.
• If you want to increase the overheads rate, then you must increase the reboiler coil.
• The same applies to the overheads total condenser if you increase the overheads rate.

You have to maintain a reasonable vapor space in the Still Pot in order to diminish any entrainment of liquid in the overheads vapor.

Why do you think the L/V molal ratio will change from previous operations simply due to Still Pot volume?
