Hi ;

I want to know if Hysys v8 can calculate the fouling factor in shelle and tube heat exchanger automatically based on the inlet . thx

yes u can do it.

Use simple steady state, input 2 inlet stream, give ur HE spec and run hysys.

Then use adjust for 1 of your outlet fluid temperature.

U will get the fouling factor.

Steve,

As a Heat Transfer Engineer, it is important to understand the significance of the "fouling factor". In reality, it is nothing but an empirical margin on surface area based on experience with specific process fluids.

I presume, you are trying to back calculate this "margin" on your operating heat exchanger in Hysys by checking the achievable duty vs what the software is calculating. Am I right?

It is important to understand that the number you get from this calculation is an "underperformance" factor and not fouling factor. It "may" be fouling or change in phase at inlet or contaminated streams with different properties or even physical damage to baffles etc.

Cheers
