Hi Folks,
I am conducting experiments to determine the binodal curve for a system containing 3 components - pyridine, water and pyridine N-oxide. The system becomes biphasic when the concentration of pyridine N-oxide becomes very low. I am following a technique wherein I add water to a mixture of pyridine and pyridine N-oxide till phase separation is seen.
The experiment is carried out in a small pilot scale reactor ( 1.2 L) which is connected to a dosing pump. The reactor is equipped with an anchor stirrer which provides through mixing.
The mixture turns turbid after the N-oxide concentration is reduced to a low value by addition of water. However, can turbidity be considered as the phase separation point? or Is there a small composition range before the turbid point where phase separation has already occurred? If so, how would one determine this point visually??
