Hi! I'm simulating a vinyl acetate plant using ASPEN Hysys V8.6. I have a mixture of acetic acid-H2O-vam and in my first distillation column, I have already separated acetic acid leaving me with a vam-H2O mixture. The vam-H2O mixture will then enter another distillation column. But this time, I'm not able to purify vam to 99.99%. Do you guys have any tips for me to increase the purity?

Hi,

It is not possible to purify vinyl acetate higher than 92.7%wt from a mixture with water, at 1 atm absolute, by simple distillation because of the azeotrope. :)
The ternary system acetic acid - water - vinyl acetate presents the above mentioned azeotrope at cca 66 °C and, even more, a L-L domain (see attachment). Fortunately, the azeotrope is heterogeneous and, therefore,
by adding a decanter downstream the condenser and recycling a part of the organic phase (aqueos phase is not turned back in column) you will be able to reach the desired 99.99%wt (?) acetate purity.
